9/8/2023 0 Comments Prodeus demo![]() Or that portal level that almost looks like a cathedral and where you enter the Prodeus Realm in three different locations to open the main portal. Like Marksman being based around lare set of narrow ledges surrounding an open lake, with a tower and invincible snipers forcing you to run from cover to cover around the area. Well a lot of the levels in Prodeus do look unique due to strictly mechanical structure. That is a fair complaint to make.īut I do like to point out that there is some method to it's seeming dullness, it's not just lack of imagination. I absolutely can see how people might think that is not enough. It really tries to purify the old formula (REALLY old formula, like pre-Build-engine FPS philosophy) and make the most of it. And that the dullness of it kinda exists in service of the core. Which made me realize that the core is VERY GOOD. With most other shooters, once you finish it, that is it, there is rarely anything drawing you back to replay, but Prodeus became a lot MORE fun on those repeated playthroughs. ![]() Of all the retro throwback shooters I've played, Prodeus ended up being the one I replayed the most. ![]() I played a couple of levels, found it perfectly functional but pretty boring, and not thinking much more of it, instead trying out other, more memorable and distinct shooters.īut then later on I just wanted something to engage my hands so to speak, a mindless shooter to clear my head, and I figured out I might give it a second try and. My initial response to the game was the same. I dont really have much to say about it, either positive or negative. It doesn't do anything new and I don't think I'll continue playing. The game puts a LOT of faith in it's community content instead, having apparently exceptionally accessible map and campaign editing tools. The campaign itself also isn't all that long. The enemies mostly play well, but look boring and play as very familiar archetypes. The levels are mechanically great, but look extremely drab, and there is very little variety to it. I have some minor issues with it - I think the way the shop works is kinda stupid, the arsenal is big, but not all weapons are good (minigun and quadbarrel particularly come to mind), and of course, the game can feel really dull and generic due to how extremely streamlined and purely gameplay-focused it is. If you want to play Doom that was not made in Doom engine, go for it. ![]() The combat is great, enemy design and more importantly encounter design is really solid, levels are mechanically interesting and for the most part really fun, and the shooting is incredibly satisfying. ![]() It does not waste any time on making levels that would resemble some actual, real locations, it does not really have any narrative setpieces, the "story" is literally consisting of 1 paragraph long statement usually hidden in SECRETS per level, meaning you could very easily finish the whole game not even knowing there is anything resembling a narrative.īut it's very good at what it does. And it really does not try to be anything but a modernized take on shooters like doom.
